What is Maturity Date?

The maturity date is the date on which a loan's final payment is due and the debt must be fully repaid. For a fully amortizing loan, the last regular payment pays off the balance at maturity. For loans with a balloon structure, a large remaining balance is due on the maturity date. Lines of credit also have maturity or renewal dates, after which the lender may renew, adjust or close the line. Track maturity dates so you can plan refinancing early.

Example

A five-year term loan funded in October has a maturity date five years later, when the final payment is due.
