What is DBA (Doing Business As)?

A DBA, also called a trade name, fictitious name or assumed name, is a name a business operates under that differs from its legal registered name. Registering a DBA is typically done at the state or county level, depending on where you operate. A DBA does not create a separate legal entity or provide liability protection. Lenders often ask for DBA filings so they can match your bank accounts, invoices and records to your legal business.

Example

Smith Holdings LLC registers the DBA "Main Street Bakery" and uses that name on its storefront and invoices.
